Genesis 1:2 The earth was without form, and void;
and darkness was on the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Note that after the creation of the heavens and the earth - the earth was without form and void. No form, no inhabitants.
It is the next statement that mankind should take note of: 'and darkness was on the face of the deep.
DARKNESS: chosek: kho-shek' / khaw-shak':

Before the earth was inhabited their was disquietude of the seas / abyss / Sheol
Jude 1:6 And the angels which kept not their first estate,
but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains
under DARKNESS unto the judgment of the great day.
2 Peter 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned,
but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of DARKNESS,
to be reserved unto judgment...
There has been an ongoing war - Satan versus the Most High God - since BEFORE the earth was given form and inhabited.
As Satan pursues his quest to exalt himself, God gives form to the earth, and creates man in 'our' image: spirit, water, blood [1 John 5:6-8].
[Gen 1:1] GOD made man 'in HIS image' - which he calls as: 'OUR image' - which is revealed [Gen 1:2] as the 'Spirit' [Holy Spirit who is Truth 1Jo 5:6] [Gen 1:3] calls for 'Light' [Jesus, the LIGHT of the world', also Truth John 14:6 ].
God reveals Himself as the Most High God [Creator], our Father, his Holy Spirit, and Jesus, the Son of God / Man [Luke 22:70 / Matthew 6:13], the Light of the world [John 8:12].
[Gen 2:8] God places man in the Garden of Eden (pleasure). In Gen 3:8 Adam and Eve, having been deceived by the devil have their eyes are opened to their nakedness [(their heart for God) being exposed] and they seek to hide from God.
God's FIRST REBUKE is to the SERPENT - Satan / the devil [Rev 12:9; 20:2] - BECAUSE GOD'S WAR IS WITH SATAN - - NOT MAN. God's plan for man is love, His plan is redemption, His plan is fellowship - - and that Satan CAN NOT DESTROY. In Satan's quest for glory, for exaltation, his plan is to destroy anything / anyone who stands in the way of his goal of self-exaltation. Satan cares nothing for man and man's allegiance to him. Satan's jealousy is simply, 'I don't want God to have it'. He uses 'man' as a 'tool' to blaspheme God, to mock God, whom he will destroy once he no longer has use of him. Satan's goal then and always - -to exalt himself above God.
Yes, Adam - the woman - - sinned. That sin caused mankind [God's delight] to be a captive of DEATH, to the spirit of the abyss. Man was deceived - Satan was premeditated in his self-will. Just as Abraham went to rescue Lot, Jesus came to rescue man because he delights in him, and he is 'family'.
God is not the enemy - He is the Friend. He is not the destroyer - He is the Savior / Redeemer.
Yes, we need to repent of our sins - our sin of unbelief - -the sin of the garden that 'you will not die'. We recognize death in the natural, but the reality is the 'supernatural':
1 Peter 1:23
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which lives and abides for ever.
1 Co 15:52
In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
Isaiah 33:14 ... Who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?”
Just as we look around us and see good - -we also recognize that evil is a reality. Heaven is a reality as well as hell being a reality. And when we pass physically from this world - heaven belongs to God, in Christ, by His Spirit. Just as we choose 'good or evil' - - we are also often subjected to either good or evil - - not of our choice.
Life is eternal - -death is eternal. Eternal life is through Christ alone.
There will be a Day of Judgment when all people will face God. Those who are not covered by the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross will be cast out into hell where they will undergo eternal punishment. [Matthew 25:36] "And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life," In this verse, the same word "eternal" is used to describe the punishment of the wicked as well as the eternal life of the believer. God has made a way out of DARKNESS:
Man needs to see this war for what it is - - BETWEEN GOD and SATAN. Both are playing for keeps. The question is 'whose side do you want to be on' when the war ends. A loving Father who has done everything to rescue you? Or a tyrannical egotist, who in the end, will yet be that and have no use for anyone but himself?
